The Valley Inn Leadership Team
Medical Director – Allan Burnside, MD - Allan Burnside grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His family moved to the Pacific Northwest when he was in junior high school. In 1971 he graduated from Post Falls High School, Post Falls, Idaho. A high school wrestler, Allan had a life changing injury at age 16. He was thrown from the wrestling mat causing spinal cord injury and paralysis. As he went through grueling rehabilitation, he gained an insight to illness that has afforded him true empathy for his patients suffering. His recovery launched his career goals for the medical field. Dr. Burnside received a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He then began his medical training at University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Family Practice Residency was completed at University of Nevada – Reno, where he was Chief Resident his senior year. He achieved Chief of Staff at Pershing General Hospital and served five years as Pershing County Health Officer. The purchase of a medical practice brought Dr. Burnside to Dolores, Colorado in 1994. The Dolores Health Clinic is part of the rural health initiatives that focus care on Medicare/Medicaid patients. Dr. Burnside still makes visits to his homebound patients and spends one day per week at The Valley Inn Nursing Home following the care needs of his patients. He also has privileges at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez, CO. Dr. Burnside has become a community leader with his service in the Dolores Rotary Club. He and his wife, Linda Burnside, Physician Assistant, work closely in their Dolores Health Clinic practice.
Administrator – Ashlee Monarco, BA - Ashlee is a native of SW Colorado. She developed her love of working with elders from jobs held during her high school years. Work at two area assisted living facilities included personal care provider and dietary assistant. These experiences helped Ashlee set her goals for higher education. Ashlee earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Human Services from Fort Lewis College, Durango, CO in December 2009. She gained experience in crisis intervention as a Detox Counselor for SW Colorado Mental Health Center. She also learned how precious home is to the elderly as a Personal Care Provider for an area home health agency. Ashlee, valuing the teamwork approach at The Valley Inn, became a Certified Nursing Assistant since joining us in the position of Social Services Director. We are thrilled that she successfully completed the training to become our Administrator! She is married with a handsome son born November 2009. Clearly, Ashlee has focused on helping people and is dedicated to her role as leader of our Valley Inn staff. Our motto, Where Quality In Life Is Most Important means a great deal to Ashlee. Her ever present smile, "can do" attitude and work as a direct caregiver make her a positive force as advocate for our residents.
Director of Nursing – Amber Crites, RN - Amber Crites was born in Wyoming and grew up in Dolores, CO. She was the youngest of three children, with two older brothers. A few years after high school, Amber moved to Phoenix, AZ, working as a secretary, marrying and starting her family. She felt the pull to return home to SW Colorado to raise her three children and began attending nursing school in Durango, CO. Since earning her RN, Amber has worked at Southwest Memorial Hospital and at our sister facility, Vista Grande Inn before joining us to lead the nursing staff at The Valley Inn. Amber loves scrap-booking, being a sports mom, spending time with family and friends and following favorite sports teams on television. Amber exemplifies a passion for long term care and is dedicated to caring for the residents and nurturing the best from her staff. She loves time spent with her residents – “I have a soft spot for older people…cranky or happy, they are all so cute!”
Social Services Director – Andrea Rosenfield - Andrea has spent 30 years as an ordained minister with the Foursquare Church pastoring in CA, FL, MO, IN, and IL as well as attending college at Capernwray in Carnforth, England. Moving to Mancos, Colorado in order to live closer to family has given her the opportunity to join The Valley Inn family where she can continue coming along side people and encouraging them. She is proud of her three children: a son who is a Navy Chief, another son who is retired Navy now working for Space X and her daughter who is a Certified Critical Care Vet Tech in Denver. Andrea also adores her five grandchildren in California. Along with spending time with family, Andrea and her husband love the great outdoors. Enjoying the beauty of Colorado on their motorcycle is a favorite pastime. We are lucky to have this lady who values “touch and time” with residents and joins the rest of our staff in exemplifying our motto,
“Where Quality in Life is Most Important”.
“Where Quality in Life is Most Important”.
Administrative Assistant – Glenda Griffin - A friend to all, Glenda makes us feel at home. Even our house cat, Rufus, feels at home on Glenda’s desk! She has been devoted to helping residents, their families, staff and visitors since 1993. What a blessing this Kansas girl has been to the smooth operation of the facility! Glenda brought vast secretarial experience to the job and loves the daily interaction with residents as their in-house banker, trouble-shooter and confidant. She raised two fine children who have given her the joy of five grandchildren. Photography and traveling, quiet time with her husband and extended family, hikes in our glorious SW are all her favorite things. Her ready smile and open door policy reassures our residents that the quality of their lives is most important. New staff members receiving their orientation are guided and nurtured to be a part of the residents’ family thanks to Glenda’s encouraging ways.
Activity Director – Kathleen (Kat) Whitlock – Our Austin, Texas, gal, like many people, came here by way of vacations in the Colorado high country. Living in Dolores, Colorado since 2010, Kat fits in well as a “mountain girl”. Showing her diversity and southern hospitality in all that she does, Kat has worked with a youth center encouraging inter-generational relationships with senior communities. An “Army brat”, Kat attended three high schools in four years with graduation from a school in the Philippines. Love of cooking and mountain adventures, Kat has enjoyed her job cooking at hunting camp from summer to November. Kat’s son has lived here since graduation from high school; both are avid skiers at Telluride. Kat brings great things to The Valley Inn family. We are blessed to have her energy, endless smiles and enthusiasm. “The residents inspire me – I want to do whatever I can to inspire them!”
Dietary Director – Tina Biery – A California native, Tina has plenty of experience in the medical field as medical assistant in a surgeon’s practice and dermatologist’s office. She learned much about the dietary field under the tutelage of Karen Gray, our steadfast, award winning Dietary Director at sister facility, Vista Grande Inn. She is proud of her three children, two girls and a boy. Her cute little granddaughter melts her heart. Tina has a love for animals that has brought her to rescue many abandoned pets. She has perfected her own dog food recipe despite the fact that her husband thinks she has gone off the deep end! Tina loves to cook and bake. She is always excited when a party is planned for our residents and their guests. “We are a family here – I love it!” Tina welcomes touring families to enjoy a complimentary meal and, with our open dining program, is eager to show all that The Valley Inn is “Where Quality in Life is Most Important”.
Medical Records – Kassidy Milligan – It isn’t often that an employee can say they have been a part of The Valley Inn family since they were two years old - our Kassidy can! The daughter of our C & G Health Care Management nurse, Donna Hauser, Kassidy came to work with her mother as a child. We are thrilled that Kassidy is continuing the tradition and brings her daughter, Elizabeth (Gerti) to work. Gerti was born October 2014 and is bringing lots of smiles to the residents. Kassidy is returning to her childhood home of Cortez, Colorado after following her Navy man to Florida and Virginia during his tours of duty overseas. We are pleased to have Kassidy’s husband on our nursing staff, as well. “I have always interacted with the elderly; I love these people – they are a part of my family.” Kassidy is thrilled to come home again to The Valley Inn. With husband and baby included, our residents are blessed with three times the love!
Maintenance and Transportation Director – Brandon Reynolds - Another SW Colorado “born and bred”, Brandon has come to be a favorite staff member of the residents. He is known as a “jokester” and loves to make our residents smile! Brandon was first on staff at our sister facility, Vista Grande Inn as a cook. He gained an understanding of dietary services from his previous position as a cook at Southwest Memorial Hospital, Cortez, CO. He was thrilled to step into the position of Dietary Director with The Valley Inn in November 2010. His versatility and "jack of all trades" skills are now being utilized as he takes pride in our building and assures residents are safe as they travel in our facility vehicles. A country boy through and through, Brandon, his wife and their three children love fishing, 4-wheeling and hiking together in our beautiful corner of Colorado. The residents love Brandon – we all are especially proud of him for the 2013 award he received from Colorado Health Care Association - Dietary Director of the Year!
Director of Environmental Services – Sandy Bazile - Welcome to Sandy’s house! That’s just how she feels about her role at The Valley Inn. Sandy has been with us since almost the beginning; 1993 was the year she started as one of our housekeepers. Sandy takes great pride in keeping our facility clean and orderly and works alongside her staff. In fact, she works alongside all departments here! You may find Sandy involved in activities, helping in the kitchen or escorting residents on outings. Sandy also became a Certified Nursing Assistant and is a beloved caregiver of our residents. With her added experience in charge of Maintenance/Transportation Department over past years, we consider Sandy a “Jack of all trades”. She and her husband have raised three wonderful children and many loving animals. After all this time, Sandy still loves her job! Sandy is always looking for a new challenge and new ways to make our residents feel welcome and at home.
