Vista Grande Inn Leadership Team
Medical Director – Allan Burnside, MD - Allan Burnside grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His family moved to the Pacific Northwest when he was in junior high school. In 1971 he graduated from Post Falls High School, Post Falls, Idaho. A high school wrestler, Allan had a life changing injury at age 16. He was thrown from the wrestling mat causing spinal cord injury and paralysis. As he went through grueling rehabilitation, he gained an insight to illness that has afforded him true empathy for his patients suffering. His recovery launched his career goals for the medical field. Dr. Burnside received a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He then began his medical training at University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Family Practice Residency was completed at University of Nevada – Reno, where he was Chief Resident his senior year. He achieved Chief of Staff at Pershing General Hospital and served five years as Pershing County Health Officer. The purchase of a medical practice brought Dr. Burnside to Dolores, Colorado in 1994. The Dolores Health Clinic is part of the rural health initiatives that focus care on Medicare/Medicaid patients. Dr. Burnside still makes visits to his homebound patients and spends one day per week at Vista Grande Inn Nursing Home following the care needs of his patients. He also has privileges at Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez, CO. Dr. Burnside has become a community leader with his service in the Dolores Rotary Club. He and his wife, Linda Burnside, Physician Assistant, work closely in their Dolores Health Clinic practice.
Administrator – Amanda Gilliland, RN - We love our rural SW Colorado roots and our Administrator’s story is a good example of our pride. Amanda started as a volunteer at the nursing home when it was housed within SW Memorial Hospital. She was too young to be on staff but her heart was with the residents, some of which were here family members. Completing the Certified Nursing Assistant training seemed the natural course to achieve RN, which she did in 2004. This care facility has been blessed with Amanda’s love and care since 2000. Amanda has been valued by C & G Health Care since the day they took over management in 2007. Amanda talks fondly of her husband and her two small children, “ornery little boys”. Amanda’s perspective is not only that of administrator and medical professional but also that of granddaughter and niece to past residents. “The elderly have a special place in my heart”. Amanda is a special person - she values and exemplifies our motto – Where Quality in Life is Most Important.
Director of Nursing – Carla Raney, RN - Carla started with C & G Health Care Management, Inc. in 2000. Growing up in Dove Creek, CO, Carla has strong country roots here in the Four Corners. Just before high school, her family moved to Gallup, NM. Carla pursued a career in nursing and achieved her RN degree in 2000 through University of NM. Varied experiences in the operating room and medical surgical nursing prepared her for this journey into Long Term Care. Carla never realized working with elders would become her favorite! Laughter is Carla’s best medicine and she creates something fun every day with her nursing home residents. This leader has also learned to be tough with the confidence to do anything. She is a widow rearing two teenagers, a son and daughter she is very proud of. Carla loves country music – attending concerts is her favorite thing in the world. Vista Grande Inn is a better place because of the tough, fun-loving, down to earth leadership of Carla Raney.
Social Services Director – Angela Sanders/C.N.A./QMAP - Vista Grande Inn residents are in love with their trusted friend, Angie. Our Social Services Director has fulfilled many roles at Vista Grande Inn since 2004. From C.N.A. to Medical Records to Medication Tech, Angie is currently pursuing her RN degree. This ambitious young lady became a Certified Nursing Assistant at age 18. Her work as an elder care professional in assisted living and hospice has developed her love of geriatrics. Angie is a Cortez girl that naturally helps others. She is a proud mom of her teenagers, a daughter and son. Her husband has inspired her with his hard work to build a successful upholstery business. Angie is our knowledgeable gateway for new residents and families who need skilled nursing care. We know you will find a friend and advocate in Angie. We offer her e-mail contact information on this website.
Administrative Assistant - Judy Dove - We are pleased to have this confident lady with us to greet the public and help residents/families with personal needs accounts and other business matters. Judy was raised in Phoenix, Arizona. She has lived in Cortez, Colorado since 1990. Self employed most of her adult life, Judy and her husband, Dave have worked with health care facilities in coordinating/delivery of quality food ordered by dietary departments. They have also been owners of a freight brokerage company as well as trucking companies. Judy is pleased with what she finds at Vista Grande Inn, commenting on how everyone on staff is so good to the residents. She enjoys being a part of this big family and appreciates the quality of care that is at the center of all we do. Judy has two young adult children that she is very proud of. Southwest Colorado entices people to pursue outdoor activities and Judy enjoys mountain biking as well as tennis. Thanks to Judy's warm personality, visitors, new residents and their families feel welcome at Vista Grande Inn.
Care Plan Coordinator – Dawn Roof, LPN - A nurse on our staff since 2010, Dawn laughed as she explained returning from maternity leave to find she was offered the position of Care Plan Coordinator. There is great confidence in Dawn from all perspectives to accurately document the needs of each resident, meet with residents and families quarterly to create the best plan of care and advocate for changes. She stepped into the elder care world becoming a C.N.A. in 2007. After thoughts of a career in marine biology, Dawn feels her choice in the medical profession is a great path for her. Dawn has also worked with Hospice and had the special experience as private duty nurse for her grandmother with Alzheimer’s disease. She and her father shared the care, working hard to keep grandma at home. Vista Grande Inn became the “right place at the right time”. Dawn now cares for grandma each day she is at work. Her sincere empathy helps families as they transition from home care to becoming part of our Vista Grande Inn family. Dawn’s own family includes the new baby boy, his older brother and her husband. She joked that she has “3 boys”! Raised here in Cortez, the outdoor activities are a natural part of family time – fishing, camping and four-wheeling. Dawn’s personal and professional caregiving journey is a big reason Vista Grande Inn is the place “Where quality in life is most important”.
Activity Director – Kim McDonnell - Kim has been the heart and soul of Vista Grande Inn since starting in 1993 (when the facility was located in SW Memorial Hospital). She shares her incredible positive energy and spirit with all – Kim exemplifies our motto: Where Quality in Life is Most Important. Kim has gone above and beyond to create special outings for residents, host the Valentine Sweetheart Ball that includes residents from all area care facilities and is brave to help our residents greet more than 300 trick-or-treaters each Halloween. Kim and her husband have lived in historic Dolores, CO for 20 years. She is so happy their son, daughter-in-law and their two beautiful grandchildren live close by. Vista Grande Inn is part of Kim’s extended family. Residents smile when they first hear Kim’s voice in the morning – they know they are going to have a good day thanks to her enthusiasm and love.
Dietary Director – Karen Gray - What a tremendous asset Karen is! Since 1994, Karen has been a part of the C & G family – working as Cook and Dietary Director for our “sister”, The Valley Inn. Then she was needed in the corporate office until she transferred to Vista Grande Inn as Dietary Director shortly after we opened our new facility in 2007. Her great cooking skills, confidence as a leader and creativity have added to our residents’ quality of life with beautiful meals and party buffets. Karen’s family moved from Arizona to SW Colorado in 1985 where she shared resort management with her husband. He now works for the widow of legendary western novelist, Louis L’Amour. When Karen is not putting together a feast, she is either riding horses or enjoying her six grandchildren…or both! She is proud of her two children who are both respected educators. We are proud of Karen for her steadfast devotion to the Vista Grande Inn family!
Medical Records Secretary – Cari Armstrong, CNA - In 2013, Cari joined our staff in the “fun department” as Activities Assistant. Vista Grande Inn offers training opportunities to staff members wishing to step into the medical field. Cari became a CNA through this program and was soon recruited to fulfill this important role interfacing with physicians, hospitals and the medical community. Cari grew up in the desert area of Mesa, Arizona. She and her husband moved to Cortez in 1995 and have reared their four children (2 girls and 2 boys) in this Colorado wonderland. Outdoor activities such as walking and hiking fill her personal time. Cari is passionate about scrapbooking and reading! Cari proudly shared that her oldest daughter is now on the CNA staff at Vista Grande Inn. We are thrilled to have Cari as part of our Vista Grande Inn family! She keeps her busy office at the nurses’ station and offers a smile and helping hand to all visitors, residents and families.
Environmental Services Director – Lionel Irving – Lionel has been with us learning the varied jobs of this department since September 2013. He is thrilled to now be in this leadership role. Lionel has been called “son” by several of our residents, an example of how he has become part of our Vista Grande Inn family. Lionel was born in Shiprock, New Mexico and lived in Kayenta, Arizona while receiving his education. Working in Cortez has brought great opportunities. He and his life mate work with Vista Grande Inn residents as they raise their small son. “Working here has made me appreciate how precious time is”, Lionel shared. He spends as much time with his son as possible – “Everything is about family.” We are grateful to have Lionel meet the daily challenges. He also has gone above and beyond to complete the C.N.A. course. Lionel is true to our residents and works hard to make Vista Grande Inn the place, “Where quality in life is most important”.
Maintenance Director - Jeramie Hawkins - Since 2009, Vista Grande Inn has been lucky to have Jeramie on our staff. He started as a dishwasher and moved into a cook position. Showing responsibility and dedication, Jeramie was promoted to Assistant Dietary Director. With lots of construction experience in his history, we are happy to have Jeramie take on the challenges and supervision of our plant operations. Jeramie is a single guy with close ties to his family - his mom, aunts and uncles. Born in Durango, Colorado, Jeramie was raised in Cortez. He takes advantage of our Southwest Colorado mountain majesty enjoying hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, hiking and prospecting for gold and silver. Jeramie holds helping others as his priority and admits he has adopted "a couple of Grandma's". We appreciate Jeramie's devotion to our residents in so many ways!
